Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé Duet- Barcelona

I discovered this video last year when I became obsessed with Freddie Mercury after the movie Bohemian Rhapsody came out. I watched every Freddie Mercury video I could get my hands on.  I came across this one, a performance that is the result of a collaboration between two extraordinary artists-- the amazing Montserrat Caballé and the equally amazing Freddie Mercury.  They made an album together in 1987.  This is one of the songs from that album. Later, after his death, it was featured at the 1992 Summer Olympics, held in Barcelona, Spain.

I think the music, the artists and the performances speak for themselves. What do you think?

  1. I agree, both of these artists and their performances speak for themselves. I haven't seen this performance before, and honestly it gave me chills! I never would have thought to put these two voices together, but when they sing together it just works. They both are such great performers and engage their audiences so well because of their energy.

  2. Who knew rock and opera could work so well together? I would have never put these two voices together but something about it works. They both have great stage presence and an energy that draws you in which makes it easier as an audience member to accept this new music they have created. It's fun to see such amazing musicians from different genres work together and bring more people together because of it.

  3. I have never seen this performance, and after watching it for the first time, all I can say is wow! I never imagined that Monserrat Caballé and Freddie Mercury would make an album together and it makes me want to look up and listen to the rest of the album! I agree with Alice and Elizabeth, who would have thought that these two artists would have collaborated and created an awesome performance? There is not an instance in this performance that would make you want to look away. Truly an awesome performance!

  5. I have actually seen this performance before! It was floating around facebook last year and I was so shocked to see it. It's clear from Mercury's music that he has incorporated classical elements and has an appreciation for classical music/technique. I had no idea, however, until I watched this performance that he had such a love for Caballe - I researched his background after watching this video and found out that he was a long time fan of hers. My favorite thing about this performance is how in love with the music they both are. They are completely in character and show a deep appreciation for the music (and each other). Additionally, I think a performance like this shatters the idea that one person can only like or perform one type of music. A person can like rock and classical - it's totally possible and totally valid!
